Please introduce yourself and where you work.

My name is Chris Raulf and I’m the founder and president of Boulder SEO Marketing, a full-service digital marketing consulting and training agency in beautiful Boulder and Denver, Colorado.

How do you think SEO has changed over the last 10 years?

I could probably talk about this for a couple of days but I’ll keep it short. Just think about how technologies such as smartphones, video games, etc. have evolved over the last decade. The same thing applies to Google’s algorithm. Google makes money because we trust it’s software script (algorithm) to show us the most relevant search results in relation to a search that we perform through one of their search options (browser on a desktop computer, mobile device, Google Home, etc.).
People used to be able to find loopholes in the algorithm and then achieve unnatural rankings that their content didn’t deserve. By recently starting to combine individual algorithm updates such a Panda and Penguin into one core, always up-to-date, algorithm, Google now ensures that we always see the most relevant content in relation to what we’re looking for.

How did you get introduced to digital marketing, more specifically SEO?

Back in 1998, the year Google got incorporated as a company, I used to work for an American financial corporation in Zurich, Switzerland. Shortly after joining the company in Switzerland, their US headquarters built a German website but placed all of the content in graphics. With Google and all the other search engines starting to grown in popularity, this made me think how these search engines are able to process the content on our website. I started to learn everything that I could about this new technology and I was probably one of the first search engine optimizers in Switzerland. That said, I’ve now been optimizing for search engines for over 20 years and it’s never getting boring.

What are the services you provide to your clients?

We offer the full plate of digital marketing services, including: organic SEO, pay-per-click (PPC), technical and functional website audits, content marketing, social media marketing and international and multilingual SEO.
We also offer half-, full-, two-day and online SEO classes in order to help clients be able to develop sustainable and powerful strategies for increasing traffic on their web or social media pages.

What strategy according to you will prevail in 2017 for SEO?

There are roughly 250 main ranking signals in Google’s algorithm. The more of those signals you address in a professional way, the better your site will rank; it’s that simply. Each and everyone of those ranking signals can be place on one of five pillars, with content marketing being the foundation. Here at Boulder SEO Marketing we follow something what I call the “5 Pillars of SEO Methodology”. In an article entitled What Is Search Engine Optimization? I walk readers step-by-step through each of the pillars. This methodology has been working amazingly well for many years now. Some of our customers have seen an increase of over 1000% in Google organic search traffic and also sales directly related to the increase in organic search traffic. It will take a bit of time since there are a lot of ranking signals to address but it’s well worth the effort.
Also, SEO tools, such as RankWatch, will tremendously support your effort in getting your site to rank higher in Google. There are many tools out there and I recommend you test and try a few so that you know which ones will work best for you.

What would your advice be to people who are looking to take up digital marketing as a career choice?

It’s an awesome field to be in. It never gets boring and there’s a lot of demand for what we have to offer. I recommend reading industry blogs, sign up for an online SEO training and attending SEO and digital marketing Meetups, conferences and workshops. Never stop educating yourself.
