However, some of the algorithms are kept secret, and people try to come up with their own explanations and predictions in an effort to figure out how Google ranks websites.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, every year we come across numerous myths about links and acquisition of links. Since they\u2019re critical to any SEO strategy, some people involved in online business continue to talk about conflicting information regarding link building no matter how ridiculous it is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re reading this article, chances are you\u2019ve encountered some of these myths and want to find out everything once and for all. If so, let\u2019s get straight to it and bust them so you can deliver your more value to your customer and don\u2019t get distracted by groundless claims by people who call themselves experts. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>1. Many of those who make such a claim cite <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/webmasters.googleblog.com\/2017\/05\/a-reminder-about-links-in-large-scale.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this warning from Google<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that reminds users \u201cabout links in large-scale article campaigns.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to this warning, Google developers have reported an increase in spammy links in articles referred to as \u201cguest posts, partner posts, or syndicated posts.\u201d Such practices are certainly undesirable because they may change Google\u2019s perception about the quality of content on a website, which profoundly affects its ranking. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the opponents of guest posting have failed to understand the meaning of this warning (and didn\u2019t even read that warning post to the end).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just think about it: why would Google punish people who write quality articles in such well-known publications as Forbes and Fast Company? Does this mean that people like<\/span><b> Neil Patel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will never be able to write his great guides on websites like that? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, it doesn\u2019t! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are the factors indicating that an article violates Google\u2019s requirements for guest posting, taken from the search giant\u2019s official blog.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.rankwatch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/link-myth-1.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-10391\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.rankwatch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/link-myth-1.png?resize=640%2C208&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.rankwatch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/link-myth-1.png?zoom=2&amp;resize=710%2C231&amp;ssl=1 1420w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.rankwatch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/link-myth-1.png?zoom=3&amp;resize=710%2C231&amp;ssl=1 2130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does writing quality content on topics that you know will violate these requirements? Of course not. Google clearly doesn\u2019t frown on guest posts in general, it just wants to prevent abuse in the form of spammy links. Links from High-Authority Websites Guarantee Top Rankings<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJust link from top websites such as Wikipedia, and you\u2019ll improve your ranking.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you heard about this \u201csure-fire\u201d strategy to get higher in Google\u2019s search results? While we realize why such a strategy may sound reasonable, links from Wikipedia and other high-authority websites don\u2019t guarantee top rankings. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, Google treats all websites equally and Wikipedia isn\u2019t an exception to this rule. And we strongly advise you do the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>3. Links are the Single Most Important Ranking Factor for Google<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This one is just ridiculous. Links are obviously important, but there\u2019s a wide range of other equally impacting factors that you should pay attention to. For example, this Aleh Barysevich, a Search Engine Journal Contributor, has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/4-important-ranking-factors-according-seo-industry-studies\/184619\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reviewed a number of recent studies on ranking factors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> completed by some of the most reputable organizations and found not one, but four critical factors:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Content Quality<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Backlinks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mobile-First User Experience<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technical Factors (encryption, headings, anchor text, interstitials, and others).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, even the best links in the world won\u2019t help you if your website doesn\u2019t provide a good experience to mobile Internet users. The so-called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/webmasters.googleblog.com\/2018\/03\/rolling-out-mobile-first-indexing.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mobile First update was implemented earlier this year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which means that Google prioritizes responsive websites. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This and other aforementioned factors will continue to play a deciding role in your ranking in the next years, so focusing your effort on link building would be an unwise decision.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>4. Links from Sites that are Irrelevant to Your Industry\/Niche Don\u2019t Help with Link Building<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The essence of this myth lies in the groundless claim that Google wants websites to link to other websites in their industry or niche. Supposedly, this way ensures the relevance of the content and increases the chance that Internet users will find it such. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there\u2019s no evidence that Google penalizes a site that links to another one that is outside its industry. If those links aren\u2019t bought or manipulative, Google won\u2019t have anything against them because they don\u2019t abuse its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/topic\/4598733?hl=en&amp;ref_topic=6001981\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">content guidelines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While SEO specialists advise against hunting for link quantity since many links from irrelevant websites are bad, many agree that it is more about the linking website authority than relevancy itself. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.quora.com\/profile\/Ronnie-Charrier\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ronnie Charrier<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Social Media Strategist at Northcutt, says: \u00a0\u201cWhile too many such links could result in an unnatural footprint, it would be at least as unnatural to only obtain links from sites that are exactly like your own.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s more, these links could be actually helpful to your link building effort because they can be extremely hard for your competitors to get.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>5. Domain Authority (DA) Defines Link Quality<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a number of metrics developed to assess link quality and define how a website compares to others. The Domain Authority metrics is one of the most popular metrics to estimate the backlink profile of a given domain. It isn\u2019t the only one, though. RankWatch enables their users to examine a website\u2019s backlinks and assess their value to the target domain against 300 parameters. The tool then groups the data into three categories, namely Toxic link, Suspicious Link and Neutrals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, there are many tools like this on the web, each having their own fans. This leads many people to believe that DA, PA and other factors are good ranking signals. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By doing so, they disregard the fact that these agencies, despite reputable, don\u2019t contribute to the development of Google\u2019s algorithms. This is not to say that these companies don\u2019t know they\u2019re doing \u2013 in fact, RankWatch is a fabulous informational source in the industry \u2013 but rather to affirm that factors like a Toxic link or DA and PA are simple guesses and for how well a website compares to others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naturally, they won\u2019t give you the best insight into how good a site is for link building. So, instead of relying on them completely, like many websites\u2019 owners do, it\u2019s better to stay true to Google\u2019s own factors that define whether a link is good, including contextual anchor text, value to users, high traffic volume of linking domain, and others. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Links are critical to any SEO strategy, so people will continue to make suggestions about link building practices even if they don\u2019t have a lot of evidence to back up their claims. So. with that being said, the most important lesson for you here is that you should always avoid spam and follow Google\u2019s recommendations.
