There is not a single solution which you implement once, and you\u2019re settled. This is why I\u2019m a little confused when encountering blog owners who do not update their old content.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Updating old content is an amazing way of boosting your traffic and increasing your ranking. It\u2019s much easier to improve the ranking of an old article than it is to rank a new one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is why I\u2019ve decided to walk you through the concept of Google Freshness and what updating your old content can do for you!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What is the lifecycle of an old article?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with any other product, content also has a lifecycle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It starts growing in traffic after it has been launched the first time. Google crawls it and places it in the search results of relevant queries, increasing traffic exponentially with every new small increase in ranking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eventually, after a period of 6 to 12 months, the article reaches its maturity period. In terms of traffic, this is the maximum capacity that can be provided by the current article.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Afterwards, the article begins its declining period. Sam Oh mentioned that an article needs to be updated only after it passes the following criteria:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The page is at least 6 to 12 months old<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The page has enough backlinks to compete with other websites<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The article is matching search intent<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The page has a good amount of traffic and is now in decline<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The content is outdated\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the situation can be different to each article, the rules are somewhat similar. An article can reach its decline phase in 6 to 18 months. If it\u2019s still growing, there is no point in trying to change or update it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, if you\u2019re stuck on the 4th page without any links, an update won\u2019t solve your issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same can be said for yearly information. There\u2019s no point in working on updating an article that is in the top 3 already.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your goal here is to boost articles that are either:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the top 15 and can reach the first page with a single boost or articles that dropped from the top 3 and still exist on the first page.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can do this research by analyzing the main Keywords that you\u2019re ranking for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Either check your tracked keywords using <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rankwatch.com\/features\/#6\">Rank tracker<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or discover new keywords that you didn\u2019t track using other SEO tools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.rankwatch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Keywords-in-top-15.jpg?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14605\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.rankwatch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Keywords-in-top-15.jpg?resize=640%2C128&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"128\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.rankwatch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Keywords-in-top-15.jpg?w=700&amp;ssl=1 700w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.rankwatch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Keywords-in-top-15.jpg?resize=300%2C60&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Analyzed data for RankWatch<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the example above, we can clearly see that RankWatch\u2019s \u201cbacklinks\u201d page is on the 12th position in the US SERP for the main keyword \u201cbacklink checker\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That page is a clear contender for our \u201cGoogle freshness\u201d campaign. By improving the content, updating its publishing date and working on some new backlinks, the article will easily improve and move on the first page. Don\u2019t worry; I will take you through each stage mentioned here.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After you\u2019ve decided which article is going to get an update, it\u2019s time to move the needle and improve it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Repair everything!<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One big problem with old articles is that the internet is forever changing, while the article isn\u2019t. Because of this, iframes will break, images pulled from other websites will vanish, and outbound links will no longer work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A broken article ruins the user\u2019s experience. Google takes notice and pushes the article outside of the top brackets, looking for relevant and complete results instead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, work on improving your media. Reduce the file sizes, add metadata and make sure that all the attached media is done through \u201chttps\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quick tip! &#8211; You can automate your link repairs by implementing a search and replace process in your database.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your website was on the HTTP version in the past, most images are surely integrated with the old version. Execute a search and replace process from HTTP to HTTPS and you\u2019re solving tons of mixed content errors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can do this by using a Search and Replace WordPress plugin.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Add more words to your article<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Content is still king, and RankWatch already proved how important <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rankwatch.com\/how-long-should-a-post-be-for-seo-in-2019\/\">article length<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is in one of their older articles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A big consensus right now is that long articles rank better. Yet, they don\u2019t recommend stuffing words or writing extra paragraphs just for the sake of it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What they do recommend is looking into the SERP. How many words do the top 5 articles have? Are they longer? If so, how many more keywords?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a rule of thumb, they do an average of the word counts in the top 5 pages and increase their page by at least 15% more than the average.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can do the research manually or use SEO tools to do it. Analyze what the top 5 pages are doing and take note on the following:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Semantically related keywords<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Backlink sources<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relevant word counts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Average Flesch <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rankwatch.com\/learning\/content\/21-is-on-page-optimization-necessary-to-rank-your-webpages\">Readability score<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I used an SEO tool to get some info about what competitors in the <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moburst.com\/ui-ux-agency\/\">UX and UI Agency<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> niches are doing, and this is what the tool delivered.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t forget about the standard rules for your content. Make sure that when you\u2019re adding more content, you maintain the same <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moburst.com\/app-store-optimization\/keywords\/\">keyword<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to text ratios, improve your header structures and add more bullet points or numbered lists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increasing an old article\u2019s word count is a great opportunity to add a table of contents. By doing this, you increase your chances of getting link snippets attached to your search results, resulting in an increased conversion rate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can add tables of content automatically to all of your articles by using either the integrated module in your theme ( The Enfold theme has a great feature built-in) or by using a table of a contents WordPress plugin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Improve your linking!<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In SEO, there are three types of links that you can use:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internal links<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outbound links<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Backlinks<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first is the easiest to control. If you\u2019re working on updating your content, make sure you also improve your internal linking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insert multiple links in your updated article to other blog posts you\u2019ve added since the aforementioned article was launched.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This work should be done the other way around as well. Find pages where your main topic of the updated article was mentioned and make sure there is a link pointing to the new article.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To find where your topic was mentioned, you can use your friend Google and a small and simple trick.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use the search: \u201csite:www.yourdomain.com keyword\u201d. If you do this, Google will show you all of the pages where you have that particular keyword or topic after you got the list, just press edit and start adding internal links.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can see an example below, the results for: \u201csite:www.rankwatch.com backlinks\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.rankwatch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Site-Search.jpg?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14603\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.rankwatch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Site-Search.jpg?resize=537%2C738&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"537\" height=\"738\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.rankwatch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Site-Search.jpg?w=650&amp;ssl=1 650w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.rankwatch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Site-Search.jpg?resize=218%2C300&amp;ssl=1 218w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 537px) 100vw, 537px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After you\u2019ve finished your internal backlinks, work on outbound and inbound links as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For outbound, make sure you add relevant sources for the information you\u2019ve acquired in the updated content. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/yoast.com\/outbound-links\/\">Yoast<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> strongly recommends adding outbound links in every article you write.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This can be a strong indicator that you\u2019ve done your research for the content, helping both the search engine and end-user.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for backlinks, you need to start doing some outreach. Getting new backlinks for your updated content will alert search engines of its freshness and relevancy. Combined with the added juice of those backlinks, it will surely boost your ranking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Modify the publishing date<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many times, the publishing date of an article shows in the SERP. This piece of information strongly affects the CTR of a page.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If, for example, you\u2019re a restaurant owner and you\u2019re searching for \u201ctop food distributors\u201d in your city, you\u2019ll click on the page that has the latest date presented, either in the SERP as a snippet, or in the title. Chances are you will never bother to click on something from 2016.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Search Engines also take into consideration your CTR when ranking your page in the SERP. And making sure you\u2019ve updated your article can rank you for date-specific terms like \u201chow to do outreach in 2019\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can change the publishing date easily on your WordPress page. We are all human, and we make mistakes. We either miss a letter or put an extra one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why we need some help from something that is free of human error.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are tons of apps and plugins that will check your content and tell you if you\u2019ve got errors in your text. Right now, I am using Grammarly. An awesome plugin that checks my content on both WordPress or Google Docs and corrects my errors at the click of a button.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Quick tip, don\u2019t forget about evergreen!<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of content freshness and updates, we can split the content into 2 types:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Content relevant today\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evergreen content<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The content that is relevant today is usually in the form of news or tech guides and how to\u2019s. \u201cWhat happened yesterday in San Francisco\u201d, \u201cHow to optimize a website in 2019\u201d, \u201cTop mobile phones for vacation photos\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless of what happens, these articles will be obsolete in a few years. New things will happen in SF, the algorithm will change, and new phones will enter the market.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the exact motive for which updating the article is recommended.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other side, there is the Evergreen content. Content that is relevant now and five years in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evergreen content can be:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Book\/Movie reviews<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social skills guides\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medical articles and definitions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Workout guides<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">History lessons<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientific articles\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, there are situations where you also need to update a scientific article.
