If we share something that contradicts what we represent, we make our position clear. And more than ever, this value-driven association must extend to your brand\u2019s social media presence. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re no longer in a world where social media marketing, or any form of marketing for that matter, can ignore cultural context. Social media marketing has morphed from a medium of awareness and advocacy to one of activism. Brands that care and brands that act stand out. Looking ahead, your social media strategy needs to center on a mission higher than your bottom line. Let your brand be a force for good. Don\u2019t plan a 2018 social media strategy, plan a 2018 social media <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">movement<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>This movement should answer two purposeful questions about your brand mission.<\/p>\n<h2>\u201cWhat do you stand for?\u201d is the first question.<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use your social media channels to take a visible and coherent stance related to your brand mission. Support, or even start, a cause or campaign that contributes to a higher purpose or social good. According to a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.adweek.com\/brand-marketing\/infographic-what-consumers-really-think-about-cause-marketing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 1,000 U.S. adults by marketing research firm Toluna, almost two-thirds of people actively seek out brands that support specific causes. Similarly, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.conecomm.com\/research-blog\/2017-csr-study\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Cone Communications found that 87 percent of Americans purchase products from companies that advocate for an issue they also care about. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure you authentically and consistently support your brand\u2019s purpose. Haphazard efforts lacking sincere commitment will fall flat. As philanthropic advisor William Usnik <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.targetmarketingmag.com\/post\/the-purpose-driven-brand-why-it-matters-more-than-ever\/all\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asserts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, &#8220;You can&#8217;t fake caring. If you pretend to care about a cause you align with, or a cause that is important to your customer, you won&#8217;t succeed. Caring to make a difference must be part of your culture, your drive, and your passion at all levels.\u201d This sincerity must infiltrate your social media strategy through timely campaigns and evergreen mission messaging.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mission means different things to different brands. Here are just a few examples.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Personal Empowerment<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For brands like Always, taking a stance is about audience empowerment. Its ongoing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/always.com\/en-us\/about-us\/our-epic-battle-like-a-girl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like a Girl Campaign<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aims to help girls stay strong and confident during the tumultuous time of puberty. This social media campaign uses powerful videos and relatable stories to present \u201clike a girl\u201d as a positive phrase. Uber <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uber.com\/partner\/madd\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">partnered with MADD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to launch a Leave the Keys Campaign to prevent drunk driving, especially during the holidays when fatalities from drunk driving spike. The campaign encourages riders and drivers to pledge to keep the roads safe. The NBA partnered with GLAAD to support its anti-bullying <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.glaad.org\/spiritday\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spirit Day Campaign<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The annual campaign promotes speaking out against bullying and pledging in solidarity with LGBTQ youth. Ford partnered with extreme adventurer and filmmaker Devin Graham to launch the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/social.ford.com\/en_US\/story\/sustainability\/fuel-economy\/experience-e2809cone-tank-adventurese2809d-with-extreme-filmmaker-devin-supertramp.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One Tank Adventures Campaign<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Graham documented his adventures in a Ford Focus with a single tank of gas to promote sustainability. You don\u2019t need to associate with a polarizing cause or campaign, but you do need an unwavering mission that can build traction over time. Now that you\u2019ve backed something, it\u2019s time to make concrete change.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>\u201cWhat are you doing about it?\u201d is the second question.<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Awareness and advocacy are admirable, but they aren\u2019t enough. The action is essential\u2014and expected. Your brand\u2019s social media channels offer platforms of proof, but your answer to this question goes beyond social media. As Gavin MacMillan, Head of Strategy at Ogilvy Melbourne, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingmag.com.au\/hubs-c\/action-brands-macmillan\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explains<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cWe\u2019ve moved beyond the eras of the image and cultural branding to a world where only the useful brands count. To be helpful, you\u2019ve got to think beyond brand ideas to content and utility that reflect passion or resolve the tension.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People don\u2019t hesitate to act on their expectations for brands. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ey.com\/Publication\/vwLUAssets\/ey-the-business-case-for-purpose\/$FILE\/ey-the-business-case-for-purpose.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harvard Business Review research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that 85 percent of global consumers are more likely to recommend companies with a strong purpose. And the Cone Communications study found 70 percent of Americans believe companies are obliged to improve issues beyond daily business operations, leading real change for both society and the environment. The viral potential of social media makes it the prime medium for widespread action. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can\u2019t just stand behind an idea, you need to make real-life moves like these brands.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Donation Matching<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donating your products or services in a one-for-one match connects a cause directly to your bottom line. TOMS integrates this approach with its <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.toms.com\/improving-lives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">business model<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by donating shoes and other services to people in need for every purchase. There\u2019s no shortage of natural disasters, political controversies, tragic violence, or personal conflicts. As the most immediate and interactive marketing channel, social media reflects the needs of society. Brands should think and act selflessly to advance a higher mission.
