Since early 2013, Devin has been an internet entrepreneur responsible for investing in and co-founding various mobile apps, online marketing & e-commerce companies, and providing SEO related consulting for hundreds of companies internationally.

Please introduce yourself and where you work.


My name is Devin Schumacher. I work at ONE400

How do you think SEO has changed over the last 10 years?


The primary way that SEO has changed has to do with its level of difficulty to execute properly, safely, and at scale.
Even just a few years ago it was possible to get excellent ranking results with just a few clicks of a button using the right software, and you would see rankings almost immediately. In fact, a friend of mine outranked George Bush for his name DURING the 2004 election – that isn’t possible anymore.
Now, to be successful in SEO you need systems, processes, reporting, and accountability. Google’s search results are getting smarter, more competitive, and more sensitive to people trying to “game the system”, so if you don’t know what you are doing you will either waste valuable resources (time and money), and can get a website penalized.

How did you get introduced to digital marketing, more specifically SEO?


I started out doing social media automation marketing for myself when I was DJing a number of years ago. We were growing a fanbase on SoundCloud, Instagram & Twitter – and It worked so well that I began to pick up friends and clients. Those clients were originally just musicians, but then brands started to approach me and wanted more than just social media growth, so I learned how to grow their website organic traffic (SEO), and it just continued from there.

What are the services you provide to your clients?


ONE400 provides law marketing & technology development for law firms, and legal tech companies. Some of those services include branding, website design, website development, PPC marketing through Google Adwords & Facebook, social media management, SEO, software development, and consulting.

What strategy according to you will prevail in 2018 for SEO?


Our strategy. We do everything at the highest level of quality and integrity, with full attention to all the details. We keep everything accounted for – from the technical optimization and changes we make to the links we build, to the data we collect. This strategy will prevail, because if anything changes we will know what we need to adjust and by how much. Successful SEO is all about testing and adjusting, and our process allows us to do that at a very detailed and empirical level.

What would your advice be to people who are looking to take up digital marketing as a career choice?


In the beginning, learn as much as you can about how everything works together on a broad level. Try to make a mind map, or draw on a whiteboard, or choose some form of organization that works for you so you can understand how all the pieces fit together – and then when you have the general overview, pick ONE THING and master it. There is way too much in digital marketing to try and do it all on your own – you need a team and you don’t need to be an expert at everything, but you have to be able to understand how it all works on a conceptual level.
Stay curious, test things, fail fast, improve, and focus on getting better everyday – don’t give up!
