Marie,

There are three major functions of a search engine in order to rank websites. The first one is called Crawling where the search engine scans through billions of documents, pages, files, news, videos, and media on the World Wide Web. Once it does this, the second function takes over, Indexing- Where all the pages, files etc it crawls, it indexes them which in other words, it categorises them. The last function is Matching- where the search engine matches the search query to the relevant web pages- It providing answers to user queries, most frequently through lists of relevant pages that they've retrieved and ranked for relevancy.
