Google Panda-

Google Panda was launched on February 2011. This algorithm was launched with the purpose of change in search engine ranking system. The idea underlying the update was simple decrease the rankings of sites use the low quality or thin content. 

The number of websites were using huge amount of advertising with low quality/spin/duplicate content before Panda. So reduce such type of spamming, Google updates its algorithm and launched Panda to increase the quality of search results.

This algorithm is designed to penalize those who cheat with Google and get ranking by using black hat seo techniques.
