Content That Will Attract Backlinks

Building backlinks can be a long and tough process; much of your success will come down to the industry you operate in and also how ‘open’ to backlinks webmasters are in your niche.

There are, however, many ways that you can dramatically increase your link building ROI by utilizing certain strategies and tactics that are proven to attract backlinks.

In this article, I will cover 5 of my go-to methods that, once implemented, can generate backlinks on autopilot.

1. Infographics

We will start with a well-known tactic that is believed to be ‘old-school’ and no longer viable.

Let me assure you, this method of creating content to attract backlinks is still alive and well in 2022, providing you do two things right.

Research Upfront

The mistake many people make is to dive in head first with what they think is an excellent idea for an infographic.

However, I prefer to put the time in upfront to ensure I’m spending my time and money on a piece of content that is proven to do well in my industry.

By searching for a topic on visual.ly or Pinterest, you can find examples that have already been produced and the reaction to them in terms of social engagement and also backlinks.

My go-to tool for this is Ahrefs content explorer which has some features that will allow you to find and filter for the very best infographic content in your niche.

Market Your Content

There is no getting away from the fact that creating a great infographic on its own isn’t enough. You need to market your piece actively to gain the required exposure.

Luckily, here is an excellent list of sites we can submit to.

You can also use your favorite link crawling too to find websites that have linked to similar content in the past and reach out to them to see if they’d be interested in featuring your piece on their website.

I find this works best by offering to write 200-300 words of unique content for them to publish alongside your graphic.

Be sure to send them your embed code so that they can use it to add your infographic into a WordPress post.

To wrap this up, you’re infographic doesn’t need to be a Picasso, by making it super relevant to your industry and even choosing a smaller sub-niche/audience is all it takes to make this tactic a success.

2. Maps

For me, maps are the new infographic. Here’s an example of the number of backlinks these maps can generate:

All of the above pages were created within the last month and are already attracting a considerable amount of backlinks.

The most challenging part of this tactic is to gather the data for populating the map, producing it be as simple as using free/cheap tools that can create either a flat image map or an interactive one.

Having success with maps is very similar to the infographic method I covered above.

People love to link to cool and interesting things, so if you can create a unique spin on a popular topic in your industry, you stand a good chance of attracting links.

If you’re looking for topic ideas for creating your own map, I like to use Pinterest for inspiration.

3. Stats & Facts

As a blogger, I am constantly looking for resources to back up my writing.

When making a statement, most bloggers will use Google to find a source of information to back-up their claims. This makes them seem more credible and also provide the user with additional reference points on the subject.

So how do we take advantage of this as business and website owners?

The image above is an example of a keyword that is searched for in Google 1,300 times per month.

Given the nature of the phrase, you can bet other website owners and blogger make up a large proportion of the people who are typing this phrase in.

These are precisely the kind of people we’re looking for as they can create links to our content.

I won’t dwell on this tactic for too long, just note that it is powerful IF you can rank.

Here is a recent example I created on our blog to target the term “YouTube Statistics.”

The key is to avoid phrases that are too difficult to rank for unless you have a large & authoritative website.

If you have a new blog or website, you should target the lower competition keywords, those with 50 to 300 searches per month to stand a better chance of ranking for them and obtaining those crucial backlinks.

4. Error Solutions

This is a recent tactic I have discovered that is being used by some of the fastest growing websites in the tech industry, but it applies to many other niches and topics as well.

They key to this is to find what kind of Error or Faults are occurring in your industry.

I’ll start with a few examples to illustrate my point:

Topic – Keyword/Phrase – Monthly Searches

Website Building – “404 error page not found” – 480 searches /mon
Vehicle Mechanics – “engine revving in park” – 140 searches /mon
Android User – “unfortunately weather has stopped” – 50 searches /mon

As you can see from these examples, each industry will have specific questions that your potential audience is typing into Google to find a solution. It is your job to provide that solution.

By crafting content that answers the searches question, you not only stand a good chance of ranking high in Google for these search terms (since they are generally not targeted and therefore have lower competition), you will also attract backlinks from other websites who use your great resource as a reference in their own content.

5. Q&A’s

There are two specific ways I attack this content strategy.

The first is to use large Q&A sites such as Quora.com. Quora is a goldmine of information and potential traffic to your website.

By entering a keyword or phrase into the search box, you will find quite a few questions that people are asking on Quora.

You can use this to your advantage by answering the most popular questions and providing the very best answer.

How do you know which questions are popular?

Simple! in the bottom corner of the right sidebar you will see something that looks like this:

It shows how many views this particular question has received. All you need to do is view 3-5 questions on your chosen topic to get an idea for what ‘popular’ means for you and your search term.

The second and perhaps better way to use Q&A’s for link building is to craft answers to the most popular questions in your industry and publish them on your website.

Pretty simple eh?

The trick here is to rank well (top 3) in the search engines for highly search for keywords.

There are ways to improve your odds of ranking; my favorite method is to use Ahrefs and use quora.com + an industry keyword.

For example:

Paste “quora.com” into Ahrefs Site Explorer
Go to the “Organic Keywords” tab (under “organic search” section of the left-hand menu).
Add your chosen keyword as a filter in the top filter bar
Optional – Add a position filter to only show SERP positions 1-5

This will display all organic keywords that Quora.com ranks for in the top 5 positions on Google that contain your chosen filter keyword.

This will give you plenty of keywords and an idea of the type of topics that people are searching for.


These five solutions are just a sample of the kind of content you can create that will drive more backlinks to your content and website.

Of course, marketing and promotion are the best ways to get the word out, but by using these methods and by creating content and resources that provide real value, you will naturally attract backlinks over time.
