I am Sherman Standberry, Managing Partner and founder of LYFE Marketing and LYFE Accounting.
How did you get introduced to digital marketing, more specifically SEO?
I was introduced to digital marketing through following Gary Vaynerchuk in early 2010-2011. He inspired us to start a social media agency. In trying to grow our agency, we looked for ways to increase our own clientele. As apart of our marketing strategy, we looked at using SEO to grow our agency and worked significantly. Our website now ranks for over 100,000 organic keywords and we are now offering this service tour social media clients.
How do you think SEO has changed over the last 10 years? And, how do you think year 2019 will shape up for SEO industry?
Relevance. Google is becoming smarter. You can study algorithms all day long but it will all come back down to relevance. You need a website that people find useful, spend time on, and enjoy. In the past, SEO was all about backlinks from other websites, and while they are still very important, Google has increasingly been paying more attention to on-page website metrics. These metrics include mobile responsiveness, website speed, time-on-site, security, and much more. And, all of these metrics come back to the simple fact that Google wants to rank the most relevant websites to the users who use their search engine.
What are the services you provide to your clients and what do you think makes your business stand out among your competitors?
We’re a full-service digital marketing agency with a focus on small businesses. Small businesses are largely underserved from agencies, and we’re aiming to the #1 option to serve them.
Everybody knows what you have achieved, I would like to talk about your failure stories and how they impacted your professional life. (As we know Rome was not built in a day)
You truly have to fail your way to success. Before our agency hit $1M in revenue, our biggest issue was finding clients. We tried various strategies, and it was truly a struggle to get our agency off the ground. Once we figured this out and grew to a 7-figure agency, I ran into a much more difficult problem – talent. As we grew to over 35 people, I could no longer be as involved on every individual client we serviced. Our clients’ success depended solely on the people servicing their account and was very frightening and stressful from a business owner’s perspective. We have had to completely reorganize how we service our clients and put many systems in place to ensure that a quality service is being provided to our clients so we can scale. We’re still working on this as I write this, but I’m sure we’ll get over this hump and run into the next big problem. But you truly have to learn as you go, embrace failure, and use it to grow.
